Samaël Deul
Samaël (they/them) is a black and queer activist, spoken word performer, archeologist and actor. They started their journey with a World War 2 remembrance project with ‘Vreedzame school’ where they performed a poem for the first time at 16 years old. After that they started writing and performing which caught the attention of the theatre production “Boys won't be boys”. Samaël started touring with “Boys won't be Boys” at age 18 and hasn't stopped. Their solo performances are activist in nature and call attention to social injustices such as human rights, racism and lgbtqia+ hatred. He often talks about his experiences as a black and trans person growing up in the Netherlands. At the youth panel for the “Raad van Cultuur” he advises counselors on matters of theatre, spoken word and art. He's currently starting his second season with Dox club and studying archeology at the University of Leiden. Samaël strives to combine knowledge of history and spoken word in performances to create social change and touch people's hearts.
With spoken word as their strongest medium, through language, rhythm, and performance, they aim to challenge perspectives and make people uncomfortable in the right ways. At DOX Club they are able to develop into a more well-rounded artist and performer, refine their voice and broaden their artistic reach.
They're never afraid to call anything or anyone out and will not hold back to spare feelings.
Furthermore, they would like to encourage the world to stop side-eyeing your Black neighbour or the homeless person down the street. Start side-eyeing the people telling you that these people are the problem.
